Resin Transfer Molding (RTM)

Resin Transfer Molding (also known as RTM) is a liquid molding process. The process involves a thermosetting resin being injected into a closed mold cavity. The mold is made up of two or more matching molds. The bottom half of the mold is where the dry fiber reinforcement (usually fiberglass) is placed. The closed mold then has resin pumped in while a vacuum draws the air out of the cavity. The resin saturates the fiberglass mat and eventually solidifies (cures). RTM is used when a customer has a part that needs to be made with a smooth finish on both sides of the part or a more consistent part thickness. Examples of parts that are made by the RTM process are semi-truck parts and electrical cabinets.
